February Tip of the Month

February 2010

When you are just starting out in aikido there is so much to learn. Everything seems to require a lot of attention. Focusing on a few very simple principles can make life on the mat a little easier. Here are three points that will help:

First, stay relaxed. This can be achieved by consciously deepening your breath. It can be hard to relax if everything you are learning is new. If that is happening for you, only practice a portion of a technique keeping tabs on whether you are holding on to too much tension.

Next keep your hands in front of you. This will help you to align your movements with your power center located 2 inches below your naval. This is a basic way to make your movements with less effort.

Lastly, move from your center. Your center, seated in your pelvis is where the biggest muscles in your body are attached. If you move from your center your movements will be very strong. You’ll be able to move yourself with greater ease and your partner more effectively.

If all this is still too much to think about while you are practicing, just focus on staying relaxed. Being relaxed will help you learn the techniques more easily and will be a quality that you will see more of in daily life.

In February, I will be meeting with every adult student in the dojo to discuss your progress and to add direction to your aikido training. Be sure to sign the roster for a time for us to meet, the next time you visit the dojo. Even if you haven’t been around for a while,
